Paris, Montreal, Washington D.C. – According to Euroconsult’s newly released research report, Satellite Communications & Broadcasting Markets Survey, Forecasts to 2023, the FSS sector had revenue growth of about 2.2% in 2013, a significant slowdown compared to that of the past several years. But the sector is currently in an investment phase, a condition necessary for new growth which is seen on the horizon. The industry must address multiple challenges in the coming years to facilitate new growth, both in mature and emerging regions.

Paris, Montreal, Washington D.C. – According to Euroconsult’s newly released report, the FSS industry generated $12.2 billion in revenues in 2013, corresponding to 2% growth over revenues in 2012. 60% of revenue-generating FSS operators experienced a revenue growth slowdown in 2013 after years of robust growth; ten operators reported a revenue decrease in 2013, compared to only six operators in 2012.

Following a critical period of cyclical low funding which concluded in a budget decrease in 2013 worldwide, moderate growth is expected moving forward which should bring world spending to $82 billion by 2023. Although civil programs drive current funding, accounting for 61% of the world’s total, defense programs are expected to experience a remarkable recovery while civil funding should plateau before entering a new expansion phase later in the decade.

Along with the growth in installation, both the take-up rate and ARPU are expected to improve. As a consequence, total revenue from passenger connectivity services is expected to grow from $440 million in 2013 to $2.1 billion by 2023.
